2. The Challenge
Revenga Smart Solutions (RSS) launched its climate initiative driven by a strong internal conviction that sustainability offers both responsibility and opportunity. Rather than responding to external pressure, the company validated its near-term targets through the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi)'s small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) pathway.
The initiative was reinforced by early success in reducing emissions, which encouraged RSS to accelerate its transition towards net-zero, anticipating future regulations. However, due to the significant investment required to electrify its vehicle fleet, the company has not yet submitted a net-zero target for validation. This remains a clear goal for 2026.
Led by its Sustainability Department and fully supported by senior management, the company integrated climate action into its core strategy—proving that even smaller firms can contribute to shaping a low-carbon future.
3. The Action
Setting Clear Targets
In 2019, RSS joined the Business Ambition for 1.5°C campaign and committed to reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 30% by 2030 (baseline: 2018). This target was validated in 2021 through SBTi’s SME pathway. Additionally, the company initiated the measurement of Scope 3 emissions as part of its long-term roadmap.
Net Zero Transition Roadmaps
In 2021, RSS approved its Atmospheric Emissions Reduction Plan 2020–2030, followed in 2022 by the Net Zero Transition Acceleration Plan 2022–2040, which establishes full decarbonization goals and compensation mechanisms for residual emissions. Key measures include:
- Electrification of energy uses
 - Deployment of on-site renewable energy (solar generation at HQ and production center)
 - Green electricity supply through certified renewable sources
 - Gradual electrification of the vehicle fleet
 - Energy efficiency upgrades across buildings and facilities

Emissions Monitoring and Transparency
Since 2014, RSS has measured its carbon footprint at the main headquarters, progressively expanding to all facilities. In 2022, the company completed its Scope 1, 2, and 3 carbon accounting across all sites. It also reports emissions data through initiatives such as the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).
Internal Engagement and Awareness
RSS promotes climate awareness through employee training, workshops, publications and active participation in programmes such as the Climate Ambition Accelerator, which has been instrumental in strengthening their strategy and launching key actions to accelerate their transition to Net Zero. It has also implemented a hybrid work model, reduced business travel and fostered more sustainable procurement practices.
Environmental Impact Through Sustainable Products
Beyond internal operations, RSS develops technologies that actively contribute to environmental sustainability through their real-world application products. For example, the RailRox level crossing system developed by RSS reduces energy consumption by using low-power LED signals and enables solar-powered operation, while minimizing the need for civil works. Additionally, the SCADA OPEN ITS+ platform improves energy efficiency in infrastructure by using AI and IoT to optimize lighting, ventilation and traffic flow, thereby reducing emissions, energy waste and environmental footprint across mobility systems.
Advocacy and External Engagement
Senior leadership participates in national and international climate initiatives, such as the #2030CEOLetter and the COP summits (COP25), while contributing to climate-focused working groups and alliances.
4. Next Steps
Science-Based Targets & Emissions Management
Although Revenga already has a validated science-based target through the SME route, the company aims to submit a new Net-Zero target to SBTi by 2026. The delay in initiating this process is mainly due to resource constraints—particularly the significant investment required to fully electrify its vehicle fleet.
Decarbonization & Compensation
The company aims to increase the use of certified renewable electricity, promote electrification (e.g., mobility and heating)and establish compensation mechanisms for residual emissions that cannot be reduced.
Risk Management & Strategic Integration
Climate-related risks and opportunities will be incorporated into corporate risk frameworks, aligned with TCFD recommendations and integrated into strategic decision-making.
Innovation & Supply Chain Engagement
Revenga plans to invest in eco-design and sustainable mobility R&D, while also encouraging its suppliers to take measurable steps toward decarbonization.
5. Overcoming Barriers
Financial constraints made it challenging to invest in long-term decarbonization strategies and infrastructure upgrades.
Measuring Scope 3 emissions required complex data collection across
the supply chain, often with limited visibility.
Carbon footprint verification, particularly beyond direct operations, involved significant technical and resource investment.
Identifying and developing compensation projects with both environmental and social impact posed implementation difficulties.
Integrating climate risks into corporate risk management systems, especially in line with TCFD recommendations, demanded organizational change and expertise.
6. Impacts & Results

Achieved a 46.5% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions in 2022 compared to its 2018 baseline.

Reached a 30.14% reduction in emissions in 2023—meeting its 2030 target seven years ahead of schedule.

Obtained the official "Calculate and Reduce" seal from Spain’s Ministry for Ecological Transition.

The company has received multiple recognitions for its sustainability efforts, including the Forbes–Credit Suisse Sustainability Award in the Technology category, public recognition at COP25, the go!ODS Award for contributions to SDG 15 and being listed in the Business Climate Action Yearbooks in Spain, among others.

Included in the #PorElClima Community of leading Spanish businesses tackling climate change.

Stakeholders, including customers and partners, see the company’s climate strategy as a clear competitive advantage, which has helped us—among other things—achieve higher scores in public tenders.
7. Key Lessons Learned
Acting on climate change strengthens both resilience and competitiveness.
Measuring emissions early helps anticipate future regulations and improve efficiency.
Size is not a barrier—even small and medium-sized companies can lead meaningful change.
Joining global initiatives like the UN Global Compact provides tools and structure for sustainable strategy.
Companies should transform compliance into opportunity, using regulation as a driver for innovation.
Employee engagement and leadership commitment are essential to embed climate action into the organization.
"The transition to net-zero is not a finish line, but an evolving responsibility that reshapes how we manage risk, measure value and collaborate across our ecosystem. Our next challenge is embedding climate variables into every strategic decision—from Scope 3 tracking to supply chain decarbonization— because only through full-system alignment can sustainability become business as usual.”
