UN Secretary-General Urges Private Sector and Governments to Heed Lessons from Financial Crisis

(New York, 25 March 2010) – In remarks delivered at a luncheon event on the occasion of the Global Compact Board meeting, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon reiterated his call for responsibility and leadership in the wake of the global financial crisis. Addressing Board members, UN Ambassadors and delegates, the Secretary-General stressed that “corporate responsibility must become the cornerstone of ethically robust markets". He added that "there is a strong case that addressing critical issues, such as poverty and climate change, can simultaneously spur growth and tackle long-term challenges".
