UN Secretary-General Underscores Business Role in Advancing Peace and Development

(Tokyo, 6 August 2010) – Today, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon addressed the Global Compact Japan Network. Reflecting on the anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Secretary-General emphasized the important role that business can play in supporting governments to resolve conflict and build peace. He referred to the “Guidance on Responsible Business in Conflict-Affected & High-Risk Areas: A Resource for Companies & Investors”, recently launched by the Global Compact, as an important resource to advance this agenda. The Secretary-General also highlighted the upcoming Summit on the Millennium Development Goals as an important opportunity to further scale up business contributions to development.
