UN Global Compact Launches Local Network in Tunisia

(Tunis, 8 September 2015) – In the presence of over 150 participants from business, Government, business associations, academia and civil society, Global Compact Network Tunisia was launched on 8 September at the Centre International des Technologies de l'Environnement de Tunis.
At the launch, keynote speeches stressing the importance of responsible business practices in the country were delivered by Sami Marrouki, Representative of Global Compact Network Tunisia and President of Institut RSE de Tunisie (IRSET), as well as Mohamed Ennaceur, President of the Tunisian Parliament and former Minister of Social Affairs.
The secretariat of the Local Network will be hosted at IRSET and is supported by a multi-stakeholder steering committee. Walid Nagi, Chief of Local Networks at the UN Global Compact, gave a presentation on the initiative and the role of the Local Network in Tunisia. This was complemented by a presentation from Mohammed Al-Fouly, Global Compact Network Egypt Contact Point, featuring examples of network activities in the region.
Discussions highlighted that national priorities in Tunisia include three main issues: job creation, governance and anti-corruption. The launch culminated with an exchange of good practices illustrated by select examples from companies operating in Tunisia and a dialogue on the role responsible business will play in addressing key priorities.
