Managua, Nicaragua

(Managua, 8 July 2014) – The UN Global Compact today launched a Local Network in Nicaragua, signaling a willingness by companies to advance corporate sustainability in the country.

Matthias Dietrich, Director of UNIRSE, will serve as acting Focal Point of the Global Compact Network Nicaragua and ensure that the network is formalized by the end of 2014. This includes requirements to establish a Steering Committee and institute a governance structure among its participants.

To coincide with the launch ceremony, a workshop was held with participants to discuss the Post-2015 Business Engagement Architecture within the Nicaraguan context, identify the most relevant engagement opportunities for local companies and set priorities for the Local Network over the next two years.  More than 70 participants took part in the workshop, including local representatives from Government, business, public sector agencies, civil society organizations and the UN.

Also yesterday in Managua, a series of roundtable discussions was organized by the CSR organization UNIRSE, with high-level participation from business organizations in the country, such as Consejo Superior de la Empresa Privada (COSEP), American Chamber of Commerce of Nicaragua (AMCHAM), Consejo Nicaraguense de la Micro, Pequeña y Mediana Empresa (CONIMIPYME). Participants discussed the role of the private sector and private sustainability finance in sustainable development, with the Ministry of Environmental Issues introducing the Nicaraguan National Policy on Climate Change.
