UN Global Compact Launches Local Network in Georgia

(Tbilisi, Georgia, 22 April) – On 22 April the UN Global Compact launched the Global Compact Network Georgia as part of the international conference on Promoting Corporate Responsibility in Georgia. The event was attended by over 150 representatives from the Georgian and international business communities, Government, the United Nations and civil society.
The Global Compact Network Georgia is hosted by the Civil Development Agency (CiDA), a civil society organization dedicated the support, promotion, safeguarding and implementation of the social and economic rights of Georgian citizens. As the Network host, CiDA will advance the Global Compact initiative and its Ten Principles at the country level. It will help companies understand what responsible business means within the national context and facilitate outreach, learning, policy dialogue, collective action and partnerships.
In the opening address of the conference, Mr. Niels Scott, Resident Representative of the United Nations in Georgia, applauded progress in country towards putting the best principles of corporate responsibility into practice. The conference featured discussions on the role of business in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. A special session led by UN Women highlighted the critical importance of gender equality for business and called on companies to join the Women’s Empowerment Principles.
