(14 February 2014, Managua) – The UN Global Compact was introduced in Nicaragua today as part of a two-day event co-hosted by the UN Global Compact, UN Development Programme (UNDP), the Government of the Netherlands, Inter-Institutional Council of CSR in Nicaragua, UniRSE, and the Dutch Interchurch Organization for Development and Cooperation (ICCO).

The event was attended by more than 60 Nicaraguan companies, as well as representatives from local business organizations, UN agencies, and the Government of Nicaragua.  Pablo Mandeville, UN Resident Coordinator in Nicaragua, noted the importance of introducing the Global Compact in order to help the private sector in Nicaragua better collaborate and complement the efforts of the UN toward the Post-2015 Development Agenda.

Local organizations and Global Compact business participants took the stage to present the business case for engaging with the Global Compact and called on all Nicaraguan companies to become signatories of the initiative. To date, 13 Nicaraguan companies have joined the Global Compact with ambitions to grow participation and to launch a Global Compact Local Network in the country.

Additional meetings on the sidelines of the introductory event were held with Government and local UN representatives to further understanding of the Global Compact’s priorities and workstreams. As part of these efforts, Nicaraguan Vice President Moisés Omar Halleslevens Acevedo discussed with the Global Compact Office and UNDP how the initiative can positively contribute to the country’s development agenda.
