(Buenos Aires, 7 February 2014) - The 5th Local Network Exchange Programme concluded on 7 February in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Co-organized by the UN Global Compact and the Global Compact Network Argentina, the four-day event was attended by contact persons representing the Local Networks of Albania, Macedonia, and Nordic countries.

The Exchange Programme seeks to foster collaboration among Local Networks by providing contact persons an opportunity to share experiences and knowledge related to Local Network operations and identify best practices across regional boundaries.

During the 5th Exchange Programme, attendees participated in practical working sessions related to network governance and activities, integrity measures, collective action and policy dialogue. Additional trainings and discussions covered topics such as Communications on Progress (COP), activity plans for the upcoming year, as well as new growth and funding strategies.

A representative of the Argentinian Ministry of Labour led a session on the role of Government in promoting and enabling corporate sustainability at the national level, and facilitated active discussions among participants on how to engage multi-stakeholders in policy dialogue.

Participants had the opportunity to visit businesses involved in the Local Network in Argentina and learn how each company implements the ten principles and integrates sustainability issues into their long-term strategy and business operations.

Representing over 100 countries, Global Compact Local Networks are playing an increasingly important role in the long-term strategy of the Global Compact, particularly as it works to define the role of business in the Post-2015 Development Agenda. Local Networks serve an essential role in rooting the Global Compact’s issue platforms and campaigns within different national, cultural and language contexts and will continue to be fundamental in broadening the corporate sustainability movement and strengthening capacity for implementation at the national and local levels.
