New York, United States of America
(New York, 27 April 2015) – On 25 April, a catastrophic 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal, with dozens of destructive aftershocks following, including another 6.7 magnitude earthquake. The Government has confirmed that 8 million people have been affected in the wake of the devastation, with 3,351 deaths and 6,833 injured. With these figures expected to increase, there is an urgent need for assistance.
The United Nations and its humanitarian partners are ramping up relief efforts in Nepal. Local resources and relief are being mobilized to the affected areas, but the scale of the event calls for additional support. In the Global Compact spirit of shared responsibility for a better world, the UN Global Compact urges your company to consider helping in this time of need.
UN Global Compact participants wishing to support immediate relief efforts can make a financial contribution to the UN Central Emergencies Response Fund.

As relief efforts intensify in the days ahead, specific operational and in-kind support requests will be shared with companies in a business engagement guide and advertised at www.business.un.org, the UN-Business partnership platform designed to connect UN needs with private sector resources and capacities, including in emergencies.
