Secretary-General Meets with Global Compact CEOs at Caring for Climate Event in China

(18 June 2013, Beijing) – As part of an official visit to China, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met with a group of Global Compact CEOs at Diaoyutai State Guest House in Beijing. Centered on the theme of “Caring for Climate – Towards a Low-Carbon Economy,” senior business leaders, UN representatives and 14 CEOs, including Chairman of SINOPEC and Global Compact Board member Fu Chengyu, shared their commitment to sustainability and insights on business action in combating climate change in the country.
At the meeting, China Association of Public Companies President Chen Qingtai, and China National Building Materials Corporation President Song Zhiping, announced their commitment to join the UN Global Compact.

The Secretary-General praised the efforts of Chinese companies to reduce emissions and combat climate change, and acknowledged the importance of Chinese companies contributing to UN priorities and global sustainability. He expressed his full support for the China Summit on Caring for Climate to be held 29-31 July in Beijing, and called on Chinese companies to participate in the UN Global Compact Leaders Summit on 19-20 September in New York.
