(Bali, 29 August 2014) – Global Compact Network Indonesia, in cooperation with the UN Global Compact, convened a Private Sector Leaders Roundtable in the context of the Sixth Global Forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) in Bali. The event, titled “The Role of Business in Promoting Inter-Cultural and Inter-Religious Peace and Harmony,” was centered around the Global Compact’s Business for Peace (B4P) platform and was attended by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and dozens of leaders from business, civil society and academia.

The Secretary-General highlighted the role of the private sector in advancing peace. He spoke to the ability of business to provide an environment where people from different cultures and religions can cooperate and demonstrate the strength of diversity. He also highlighted the efforts of Business for Peace in helping companies to advance the goals of human progress and economic prosperity.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon attended the Private Sector Leaders Roundtable on "The Role of Business in Promoting Inter-Cultural and Inter-Religious Peace and Harmony.”

UN Global Compact Board Member Dr. Martha Tilaar conveyed a special message from Global Compact Executive Director Georg Kell: “As business has expanded globally, peaceful and harmonious conditions are increasingly fundamental for long-term market success. Many companies still consider questions of interfaith relations and social tensions to be external to market success, but a growing number of companies realize that long-term market success can only be assured where societies have harmonious relationships.”

Business for Peace was officially launched in Indonesia in February 2014. Two new companies pledged their commitment as part of today’s event.
