New York, United States of America

(New York, 24 June 2010) – New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg welcomed more than 1,200 leaders from business, government and civil society to the United Nations Global Compact Leaders Summit on Thursday, calling for innovative public-private partnerships and proclaiming that New York City “strives to advance the principles of the UN Global Compact every single day."

In his keynote address to top executives from over 90 countries the Mayor outlined numerous ways in which the City of New York is working to advance sustainability, particularly with regard to the environment and the administration’s goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent by the year 2030. Speaking on  the issue of human rights, Mayor Bloomberg stressed business respect for human rights "earns the consumer respect and support that no marketing or advertising campaign can buy.”

Mayor Bloomberg concluded by urging more responsible business practices around the world. Calling the Global Compact principles “sound business policies” he argued that with more companies advancing principles, “we can achieve the goal we all share, no matter who we are or where in the world we live: Leaving our children a home that is cleaner, freer, and more secure than the one we found.”
