(New York, 21 September 2012) – In seeking to assist global companies with understanding what counts as a charitable contribution, the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy (CECP) has provided new and comprehensive guidance through its publication, Developing the Global Guide to What Counts: Expanding the Boundaries of Corporate Giving. The new report, developed with pro bono support from Deloitte, not only answers the fundamental question of “What counts?” when reporting total corporate giving, but also answers “How was it determined what counts?”

The report outlines the variety and complexity of the giving guidelines in 17 nations with the highest concentrations of Fortune 500 firms. From the absence of tax deductions in Russia to required giving in Brazil, the report highlights how differing country standards create obstacles to consistent global reporting, and features the research results toward creating a simplified reporting framework that empowers the business community to capture and compare contributions.

In order to continue advancing the work of the Global Corporate Giving Initiative, Fortune 500 companies are invited to participate in a new corporate giving benchmarking offering from CECP through a brief global survey. To complete the survey by the deadline of 3 October 2012, please visit www.corporatephilanthropy.org/global.
