Local Networks in Africa and MENA Share Innovative Approaches to Promote Corporate Sustainability in the Region

(Cairo, 17 December 2014) – The Global Compact Local Networks Regional Meeting Africa and MENA concluded today in Cairo. Representatives from Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Egypt, Kenya, Sudan and Uganda discussed local network management and governance, with a special focus on innovative ways to promote corporate sustainability and the 10 Principles of the Global Compact.

Global Compact Network Egypt presented their recently launched mobile application, the first of its kind among the Local Networks. The tool offers a unique opportunity to Local Network participants and other stakeholders to receive updates on Egyptian Network activities, share photos, access contact details and find other relevant information about the network and its members.

The first day of the Regional Meeting featured updates from the UN Global Compact and discussions around the latest developments in Local Network governance. Local Networks were asked to give feedback on the Local Network Progression Model, Engagement Framework, Local Network Management Toolkit and Local Network Award criteria.

The Africa Sustainability Initiative was also presented to Local Networks, which exchanged ideas on how Local Networks can advance corporate sustainability across Africa and increase the impact on the ground. Local Networks received training on network management in order to build their capacities in areas such as recruitment, fundraising and media outreach.

The Regional Meeting ended with a business day on corporate sustainability and social development, emphasizing gender equality and the Women’s Empowerment Principles. Companies and their stakeholders discussed the impact of women's empowerment on social development.
