Local Network in Bulgaria Convenes Stakeholders Around the SDGs, Presents Strategic Plan

(Sofia, 19 May 2016) - On 19 May 2016, a public discussion on the “Sustainable Development Goals: A Better World by 2030” was held in Sofia, Bulgaria. The keynote speaker was Ms. Irina Bokova, UNESCO Director-General.
Ms. Bokova stressed the importance of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), implemented for the first time in close cooperation with governments, civil society, the private sector and academia. “In recent years,” said Ms. Bokova, “the international community has hardly rallied around something as universal and changing…as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted by the UN last September.”
Mr. Ognian Trajanov, Chairperson of the National Council of Global Compact Network Bulgaria, acted as a panelist for the event and presented Ms. Bokova with a personalized copy of the network’s Strategic Plan 2015+. This was the second public presentation of the Strategic Plan 2015+ since 1 March 2016.
Said Trajanov: “We’ve concentrated not only on what is expected from the business community – namely, economical development and innovations – but rather on other spheres, such as education and upbringing, professional orientation, responsible consumption. The programmes ‘The Responsible Choice’ and ‘Proud of my Parents’ Work’ constitute examples of collective actions. They bring benefits not only for business but for society, thereby confirming that business can be a force for good."
Through this event, the Global Compact Network Bulgaria emphasized that importance of both responsibility and opportunity in implementing the SDGs. The Local Network continues to strive to motivate and inspire various stakeholders in developing and sharing their agendas, with the aim of translating the SDGs into the local reality.
