Local2030 convenes partners for a two-day review of the local dimensions of the Sustainable Development Goals

UNITED NATIONS, New York, 16 July 2019 — Speaking at the opening session of a two-day review of the local dimension of the Sustainable Development Goals, Lise Kingo, CEO & Executive Director of the UN Global Compact highlighted the important progress made by Global Compact Local Networks to advance the 2030 Agenda at the national level.

“For the last four years, close to 70 Global Compact Local Networks have been working to make the Global Goals local business, and we have seen amazing interest among businesses all around the world,” Kingo said. “81% of our companies are already taking action on the Global Goals and 72% of them are doing so based on our Ten Principles.”

Lise Kingo, CEO & Executive Director of the UN Global Compact spoke about the important work done by Global Compact Local Networks to advance the Global Goals at the local level.

Organized by Local2030 on the sidelines of the High-level Political Forum, the Local Action for Global Commitments event highlighted local contributions to the achievement of the Global Goals, providing a platform for business, financial institutions, Government, UN agencies and civil society to identify opportunities for collaboration and accelerate action towards localizing the Global Goals.

In her remarks, Kingo emphasized that financing the Global Goals is the most critical challenge in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, calling on business to apply an “SDG lens” to foreign direct investment, ensure that their corporate pension funds are aligned with the SDGs, and adopt new and innovative financial instruments, such as SDG bonds.

Melissa Powell, Chief of Staff of the UN Global Compact, moderated a panel discussion on the local dimensions of Goal 17 on partnerships for the Goals.

Local2030 is a UN-wide platform that brings together leaders from national, regional and local governments, the United Nations, private sector, civil society, philanthropy and academia to collaboratively develop and implement solutions that advance the SDGs at the local level.
