Korean Business Leaders Step Up to Advance Peace

(Seoul, 26 August 2013) – Korean business leaders expressed strong interest in taking action to advance peace in the workplace, marketplace and local communities during a visit today by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on the occasion of the Global Compact Network Korea’s annual CEO Breakfast. The Korean Network announced that it will join Business for Peace, a new initiative to be launched at the Global Compact Leaders Summit (19-20 September, New York) that will assist companies in implementing responsible business practices in conflict-affected and high-risk areas.
“This September, chief executives from around the world will attend the UN Global Compact's triennial Leaders Summit in New York, and there, Business for Peace will be launched. The Global Compact Network Korea together with our business members will strive to participate in the platform for Business for Peace to expand and deepen its impact domestically as well as on the global scene,” said Ambassador Hong-Jae Im, Secretary-General, Global Compact Network Korea.
The Global Compact Korean Network’s CEO Breakfast provided the opportunity for leading Korean business executives to discuss ways to advance sustainable development. The Secretary-General called on Korean companies to actively engage in shaping and implementing the post-2015 UN development agenda, and to scale up efforts to empower women throughout their organizations. He also invited business leaders to join him at the Global Compact Leaders Summit this September, where he will introduce a global architecture for business to contribute to global priorities.
