Yokohama, Japan, 30 August 2019 — On the sidelines of the Seventh Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD VII), the United Nations Global Compact in partnership with the Global Compact Network Japan convened a select group of leaders from business, academia, Government and the United Nations to the Japan-Africa Responsible Business Roundtable to discuss the critical role that the private sector can play in supporting Governments to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the Africa region.
Lise Kingo, CEO and Executive Director of the UN Global Compact, greeted some 100 participants in her welcome video message, emphasizing the importance of harnessing the potential of growing African economies for sustainable development and long-term prosperity. In the Leadership Dialogue session, four renowned panellists from Japan and Africa shared their knowledge and experience in providing innovative solutions and strong efforts towards achieving the Global Goals in the Africa region through responsible business practices in alignment with the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact. Sandra Wu Wen-Hsiu, Member of the UN Global Compact and Global Compact Network Japan Boards, spoke about the contribution of the private sector to the SDGs through new business models and local partnerships.
The event was a resounding success and demonstrated that the private sector are indeed vital partners in accelerating the achievement of the SDGs, and the UN Global Compact and its Local Networks are well-placed to mobilize the private sector to realize the objectives of TICAD and other such South-South Triangular Cooperation instruments.
