Global Compact Network Spain Weighs in on Business for the Rule of Law Framework

(Barcelona, 26 March 2015) – Announced in September 2013, the Business for the Rule of Law (B4ROL) initiative aims to engage the business community in efforts to support the rule of law. Global Compact Network Spain, in collaboration with Pombo Foundation, held consultations as part of the global consultation process to develop a framework on B4ROL.
The consultation drew over a hundred attendees from various companies and law firms. As part of the consultation process, Global Compact Network Spain developed a workshop in partnership with specialists from law and management.
In his remarks, Ángel Pes, Global Compact Network Spain Representative, noted: "The private sector has a main role in the new sustainable development agenda, one of which is the extension of the rule of law. That´s why the Spanish Network has joined the UN Global Compact in this challenge". Pes further highlighted the relationship between the B4ROL initiative and respect for human rights and anti-corruption, two main focuses of the UN Global Compact’s work. “The rule of law is ideal for companies that take long-term decisions," said Pes.
Business for the Rule of Law is an initiative that was announced by the UN Secretary-General in September 2013 at an event hosted by LexisNexis and the Atlantic Council. The UN Global Compact has been charged with leading the initiative which aims to engage the business community in efforts to support the rule of law. Business for the Rule of Law (B4ROL) will serve as a complement to business respect for the UN Global Compact Ten Principles, and will inform the UN Global Compact’s approach to business engagement on the Sustainable Development Goals.
