(Dakar, 19 December 2014) – Since 2012, Global Compact Network France – with support from the French Agency for Development (AFD) – has engaged in a campaign to promote the UN Global Compact ten principles among companies in sub-Saharan countries. This year’s focus was on Senegal.

An event was organized in Dakar on 17-19 December 2014, enabling representatives of AFD and Global Compact Network France to study needs and local dynamics as they relate to corporate sustainability and to promote the UN Global Compact with numerous stakeholders, including local and multinational companies, Ministries and public entities, and business schools. Participants showed strong support for the campaign, allowing the network to establish connections with many local organizations.

On 17 December, a lunch was organized by the Ambassador of France to Senegal and his wife on the theme of the UN Global Compact, gathering 20 representatives from various organizations.

The following day, a roundtable was organized for 300 participants by the business school CESAG on the theme, "What is the energy for our future? An issue of sustainable development.” The roundtable offered a global perspective of current and future energy issues, including a discussion about opportunities for West Africa and Senegal. Speakers – which included representatives from business, civil society and the Local Network – addressed the need for production systems and electricity supplies that are adapted to local specifications, as well as the need to engage local stakeholders, especially young people, to guarantee a harmonious and clean energy future in West Africa.

Discussions are currently underway with the UN Global Compact in New York to officially re-launch a Local Network in Senegal.
