(Bogotá, 12 August 2014) – Global Compact Network Colombia convened its Fourth Annual Global Compact Congress, “Architects for a Better World: Building the Post-2015 Business Engagement Architecture,” 11-12 August in Bogotá. The Congress provided an opportunity for UN Global Compact participants in the country to reflect upon the priorities of the global development agenda, and provide valuable insights on their role in achieving future Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Over 720 participants from businesses, Government, UN agencies, civil society, and academia attended the event.
Global Compact issue platforms were highlighted as a means for encouraging partnerships that respond to development challenges.Participants discussed private sector solutions that positively impact the development agenda, including the Post-2015 Business Engagement Architecture. Companies, civil society, and Government representatives agreed on the importance of strengthening the four building blocks of the Architecture in a collective effort to scale the value of corporate sustainability and enhance the transformative role of business in the post-2015 development agenda. Participant concluded that for this to be possible, individual businesses, investors, governmental institutions and business schools need to play key roles in identifying opportunities to create value.
In dialogues held at the Bogotá Chamber of Commerce, participants had the opportunity to analyze successful sustainability practices, identify risks, suggest strategies for the future, and learn about engaging on Global Compact issue platforms such as the CEO Water Mandate, Business for Peace, and the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs). Country launches for both the CEO Water Mandate and the WEPs at the event helped promote high impact corporate sustainability strategies that favor competitiveness, promote innovation, and support socio-economic processes that contribute to development while responsibly managing natural resources.
