LISBON, 25 September 2019 — This November, Global Compact Local Networks from all corners of the world will convene in Portugal along with other SDG thinkers, activists, leaders and entrepreneurs to identify and drive solutions that can help local business to advance the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The upcoming events — to be organized at the Culturgest Foundation of Caixa Geral de Depósitos Lisbon — include:

Mário Parra da Silva, President of the Board of Global Compact Network Portugal, encouraged stakeholders to come to Portugal to share ideas and advocate the case for responsible business practices around the world.

“Sustainability is a young, renewed spirit,” said Mário Parra da Silva, President of the Board of Global Compact Network Portugal. “Come to Lisbon and help the UN Global Compact and Global Compact Local Networks to build a better world for all. To deliver the 2030 Agenda within the next ten years, we will need to work together to share ideas, inspire and advocate the case for responsible business practices throughout the world. The events taking place in November will help lead the way.”

He added, “In my view, the opportunities of achieving sustainable development and the risks of climate change have never been so frequently discussed through society and business as we see today.”

Paulo Moita de Macedo, CEO of Caixa Geral de Depósitos spoke about his company's work in the area of sustainable finance.

Paulo Moita de Macedo, CEO of Caixa Geral de Depósitos described his company’s sustainability action plan, saying that it addresses the main challenges of sustainable finance, such as the commitments under the Financial Initiative (UNEP FI) and the Principles for Responsible Banking. “These underline the opportunity for the banking sector to align with common demand-related values and goals to reach an ambitious economic, environmental and social transition, stemming from the SDGs and the Paris Agreement.”

Next June, Portugal and Kenya will host the UN Secretary General’s 2020 Ocean Conference. The UN Global Compact and its Local Networks will work to advance a strong and meaningful participation of the private sector, both in terms of being present in Lisbon and supporting the conference and its outcomes. The UN Global Compact has recently launched the Sustainable Ocean Principles which will be featured at the event.
