(New York, 18 April 2013) – Ahead of the Annual Local Networks Forum (ALNF) set for 24-26 April in Geneva, the Global Compact today released the 2012 Global Compact Local Network Report. This annual publication showcases the critical work of Local Networks to advance corporate sustainability around the world.
The report provides a comprehensive view of Local Network activities related to the objectives of the Global Compact – namely, in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption, and in support of broader UN goals and issues. While not an exhaustive list of achievements, this year’s report provides key milestones and activities from over 50 networks who contributed content.
Highlights from the 2012 Local Network Report include the launch of a new network in Myanmar in May 2012. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon participated in the event, during which 14 companies and the Myanmar Chamber of Commerce formally joined the Global Compact. Nine Local Networks also held events related to the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs), with the WEPs being launched in France, Germany and Iraq.
A special section on the Rio+20 Corporate Sustainability Forum – held in Rio de Janiero last June to advance the business contribution to sustainable development globally – highlights the leading role played by Local Networks in preparation of the historic event. Local Networks organized 20 of the 120 sessions held at the conference and launched several new activities, resources and commitments.
Through 101 Global Compact Local Networks, companies are convening and acting on sustainability issues at the local level. Networks serve as an essential role in rooting global norms, issue platforms and campaigns within a national context, and provide an important base to jump-start action and awareness on the ground.
As underlined in this year’s report, Local Networks are critical building blocks for the implementation of the UN Post-2015 Development Agenda. Building the capacity of these local operations represents a fundamental opportunity for the Global Compact to increase the scale and intensity of sustainability globally. All companies, subsidiaries and suppliers are urged to be active in the networks where they operate.
