(Santiago, 10 March 2016) – Global Compact Network Chile, together with the Santiago Stock Market and UN Women, participated in the “Ring the Bell for Gender Equality” initiative on 10 March alongside over 30 stock exchanges around the world. By ringing the closing bell at Bolsa de Santiago – with the special participation of President Michelle Bachelet and five women ministers – the network contributed to a global effort to raise awareness and highlight the importance of women in business.

The President of Bolsa de Santiago, Juan Andrés Camus, highlighted the important contribution of women to the development of capital markets and emphasized the work being of the stock exchange to modernize and adopt international standards that help make the Chilean market become more dynamic and competitive. He welcomed the “Ring the Bell” initiative and called on companies to promote the active participation of women in business.

The representative of UN Women in Chile, María Inés Salamanca, said that "in the world, every day there are more companies and leaders who assume commitments for gender equality; Chile cannot remain behind this trend and we have to make gender equality an asset for companies."

This activity joins Bolsa de Santiago’s other initiatives, including a sustainability index and work with the Association of BCS and Global Sustainable Stock Exchanges to promote transparency and enhance international best practices in local capital markets. In addition, Global Compact Network Chile is working with Bolsa de Santiago and UN Women to advance transparency in financial markets and integrating ESG and gender equality into analysis.
