Business Sets Sights on Delivering on Education Framework by 2030

(Incheon, 21 May 2015) – The World Education Forum, organized by UNESCO and hosted by the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of Education in Incheon, convened 1,500 participants from the global education community – including Government ministers from more than 100 countries, civil society, youth groups and the private sector. The Forum set out to take stock of progress made on the Dakar Framework for Action adopted in 2000 and the Education for All initiative, and to prepare a new education agenda to ensure quality learning for all by 2030.
The Education 2030 Framework for Action highlights the important role the private sector can play in supporting Governments in delivering on the right to education. The UN Global Compact and the Global Business Coalition for Education (GBC-Education) co-organized a session to explore how business can coordinate action with education partners to achieve the 2030 education agenda. Panelists and participants underscored the value of dialogue between different stakeholders for building trust to drive effective learning through scalable and sustainable education solutions.
The Forum concluded with the adoption of the Incheon Declaration and public commitments made by UN and other partners. Georg Kell, Executive Director of the UN Global Compact stated: “Year after year business views education as a top development priority. The UN Global Compact is committed to working together with UNESCO and UN partners to support this important issue.”
A collection of case examples jointly developed with GBC-Education, Investing in Education: Lessons from the Business Community, was launched on this occasion. The publication aims to inspire and guide business investment in education.
Earlier in the week, Georg Kell visited Sogang Business School, a signatory of the UN Global Compact and the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME). He spoke to students on the growing relevance for business to internalize corporate responsibility in order to achieve long-term success. PRME engages academic institutions to champion responsible management education. PRME is also leading the work of UN Global Compact sister initiatives on Education for Sustainable Development in the context of the post-2015 development agenda.
