(Abuja, 5 March 2015) – Anti-corruption efforts received a major boost with a two-day training workshop for senior Administration officials from ministries, departments and agencies of the Federal Government of Nigeria, in Abuja, Nigeria. The course, co-hosted by the UN Global Compact, The Nigerian Economic Summit Group and the government’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, from 4-5 March, was attended by a wide spectrum of senior officials from across the Nigerian public service.

The training of public officials on how to assess the risk of corruption in order to develop and implement appropriate control measures generated unprecedented interest with incisive and robust discussions on effective strategy.

This was perhaps the first time that a training of this kind was organized to equip a wide range of senior officials with the technical expertise on how to assess the risk of corruption and its attendant costs, by identifying factors that inhibit good governance.

With the expertise acquired from this workshop, it is expected that the fight against corruption in Nigeria would be invigorated and more strategically pursued. Risk assessment is a critical prerequisite in appreciating the context, patterns and trends of the manifestations of corruption. It enables the design of appropriate control and intervention measures and management mechanisms.

The Nigerian assessors trained are expected to replicate the knowledge acquired at the workshop in their various agencies, in order to address the challenge of corruption in a more informed, contextual, customized and effective manner.
