African business leaders showcase promising achievements in climate action at the 2023 Africa CEO Forum

ABIDJAN, 5 June 2023 — The Africa Business Leaders Coalition (ABLC) convened during the Africa CEO Forum held earlier this month, unveiling their latest achievements and results as the unified voice of the African private sector. The ABLC, established by the United Nations Global Compact in 2022, announced encouraging advancements in climate action. This pioneering pan-African private sector coalition, comprised of CEOs and Chairpersons from 57 diverse African companies, showcased notable progress and underscored its commitment to a sustainable future in Africa.
During the 2022 UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) in Egypt, ABLC members announced their Climate Statement, featuring numerous company commitments and international calls to action. In Abidjan, the Coalition introduced their latest accomplishments:
- Increased commitment to renewable energy and emission reductions: In the past year, the number of ABLC members setting targets to increase their share of renewable energy use has doubled. Moreover, 20 per cent more members are now quantifying greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across Scopes 1, 2, and 3, highlighting their dedication to measuring and reducing environmental impact.
- Enhanced resilience and climate risk assessment: ABLC members made substantial strides in developing company resilience plans, with the number tripling since last year. In addition, the number of members actively assessing their climate risk exposures has doubled, demonstrating a heightened awareness of the need to address climate-related challenges proactively.
- Advancing just transition commitments: Recognizing the importance of a just transition, ABLC members have shown increased awareness and commitment by actively developing company-level just transition plans. This increased engagement reflects their understanding of the social and economic implications of transitioning to a sustainable economy.
Momentum is expected to build amongst ABLC members as further progress will be reported during the Africa Climate Action Summit in Nairobi, Kenya, this September, and more updates anticipated during the 2023 UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) later this year.
ABLC is seeking to help African business leaders bring tangible examples of climate action to the international community.
